“Christian ethic constructed solely on the basis of the incarnation would lead directly to the compromise solution. An ethic which was based solely on the cross or the resurrection of Jesus would fall victim to radicalism. Only in the unity is the conflict resolved. Jesus Christ the man -- this means that God enters into created reality.” (Page 131)

Cover notes: DIETRICH BONHOEFFER was born in Breslau in 1906. The son of a famous German psychiatrist, he studied in Berlin and New York City. He left the safety of America to return to Germany and continue his public repudiation of the Nazis, which led to his arrest in 1943. Linked to the group of conspirators who attempted assassination of Hitler failed, he was hanged in April 1945.

This book is stunningly beautiful and complex. It will require several reads to glean all the depth of thought. Bonhoeffer is so beyond the modern Christian scholars in the degree to which he probes a concept - but he is well worth the time and effort to grasp a small measure of his ideas and his interpretation of Christ.
